Nokia X7 Unboxing and first impression

This post is a little bit late coz I was busy at work. Luckily it’s Sunday and it’s my day off. So this is the right time for my post. Anyways, as you all know with my previous post, I got a Nokia X7 from the guys at WOMWorld.  And oh! I almost forgot, WOMWorld is now Nokia Connects. So, Thank you Nokia Connects for the review unit. This is my first time to review a unit and as usual we’ll start with the unboxing. The device, which features a large 4 inch screen and preloaded games, is the second smartphone from the Finnish company to ship with Symbian Anna software update together with the Nokia E6. It was released last June 2011 and known for it’s amazing screen brightness and screen size.

“The large display on the Nokia X7 is perfect for internet browsing, playing games and viewing video content,” said Mike Smith, Device Portfolio Manager, Nokia Philippines.

“Not only have we preloaded the Nokia X7 with the popular gamesAsphalt 5 HD and Galaxy on Fire HD, but our customers can now enjoy a whole bunch of other software improvements through Symbian Anna. Browsing and page downloading is faster, and Ovi Maps is enhanced with search features, public transportation routes and check-ins for various social networks. Typing texts and email is also easier with the vertical QWERTY and split-screen view that Symbian Anna offers.”

Nokia X7 is available in Light Metal and Dark Metal metal.

Side Note: I’ll stick to posting pictures only for the unboxing. Because my internet really sucks at uploading huge files like video so I’ll pass the video unboxing.

Now Let’s proceed with the Unboxing.

To start with I will highlight on what are my first impressions regarding the device (exterior hardware):

  • Nokia X7’s case is made of stainless steel and glass – delivering a solid and durable feel in the hand.
  • The form factor makes it easy to hold it with your hand
  • It looks Techy with the grills
  • 4.0″ Display makes it more appealing to eyes
  • Over all design is excellent

What comes in the box?

1. Nokia X7 unit itself
2. Charger
3. USB Connector
4. X-series Headset
5. Manuals
6. Service Card

This is a review unit so what’s inside the package depends on the region.

The box looks an attraction instantly even we didn’t open the box yet. Of course, this packaging was likely made from recycled materials which is Nokia’s brilliant idea in order to contribute on saving planet earth.

Once you open the box you can find the Nokia X7 covered with easy-to-remove plastic protection, under it is the removable sim card slot. And below them you can find the user’s manual, USB charger, extra set of headset buds and a USB cable. It’s nice to see a different design of the headset, compared to what I have in my C7 which really looks old and crunky. The good thing with the headset is that it has dedicated music and call keys. I thought a USB on the go is included but I coulnd’t find it though.

I just love the X7 design. It feels like you have the phone of the future. The X7 really inherits stylish design. It’s very sleek, bold and elegant with a touch of futuristic theme. Noting the grilled corners and shiny body as the main attractions. Also, X7 feels more solid (if you’re okay with a metal body feel) compare to N8 as it’s heavier and metal used is different from anodized one. I can say that X7 design is excellent from feel to looks.

On top of the Nokia X7 is the uniquely shaped Power/Lock key, which also handles screen lock and the ringing profiles (upon a long press). The two wired connectivity ports are here too – the microUSB that can be used for charging and the 3.5mm audio jack. At the bottom, there’s the mic pinhole and some labels. The top and bottom is made with plastic but still looks good. One thing I dislike is the connectivity ports doesn’t have a cover, so dust can easily penetrate inside your phone which is not good.

In front you’ll find of course the massive 4” AMOLED screen, on top there are proximity and ambient light sensors hiding near the earpiece. The screen is made of Gorilla glass so you don’t need to worry much about scratches. There’s no video-call camera here or call & end buttons like the C7. The bottom only has the appropriately placed menu button, which for me is a little bit stiff to press. You’ll probably miss a thing on X7 because, you can’t see any light coming from the menu button like the N8 and C7 which some find it nice to look at, especially when you receive and miss a call. The X7 touch sensitivity/feedback is pretty impressive and the screen brightness is good, even on direct sunlight.

Now, on the back you’ll find the 8.0 megapixel camera and it’s dual led flash together on a black strip at the center top. The camera lens doesn’t have a cover so it’s prone to scratches once you put it somewhere or even on your pocket. The back is mostly made with solid brush-finish stainless steel so it looks very classy. Also at the back you’re supposed to find the battery but unfortunately for X7, the battery is not user accessible which is a hassle when you like to carry some spare batteries when you travel. The downside with this, is that once the phone hangs you can’t do anything rather than wait for the battery to drain out.

Let’s try the buttons. On the left side you’ll see the sim card and memory card tray. Both work the same way – you press on the dot, which cause the other end to tilt up. It’s really annoying and hard to pull out the trays for the first time and when you’re done you need push back the tray in.  On the right side there’s the shutter and volume rocker key which is very hard to press. It’s located on the sloping side of the phone, so when you try to press it,  there’s a tendency that the phone will slip when not firmly hold.

This phone is designed with four corners beveled that looks like speaker grills but in reality the phone only has 2 speakers at the bottom. The grills just made the phone look cool and futuristic.

All in all the X7 is well built in terms of design though there are some drawbacks with the buttons. Overall its compact and handy.

Well, these are just my first impressions for X7. Expect more stuff in the coming days regarding on the performance and my experiences with this phone.

Feel free to leave some comments and I’ll gladly drop a reply.

The Nokia X7

Finally, today I received the Nokia X7 sent from the wonderful guys of WOMWorld. After some delays at our customs office, I now have in my hands the great X7.

As for my review and unboxing and of course my first impression I’m going to post it soon. And for my review with this phone I will only use purely pictures. No videos for me because my connection is not that cooperative for uploading huge video files.

So, I hope you guys will check my blog for my first complete review of the Nokia X7. Meanwhile here’s a sneek peek of the X7 I received.
